ARGYLL GARDENS QUEENS JUBILEE SUCCESS

Now that the glow from the Queens Jubilee Beacon has been replaced by the glow of the Sun here in Sunny Dunoon the pre lighting entertainment held in the Argyll Gardens has been deemed a success by the organises the Dunoon Community Council.

Rock Trish from Dunoon Community Radio’s Friday  WHAT EVER ROCKS YOUR BOAT was in attendance and has written this report on the night’s event with more photos

The sun Shone on the righteous for Monday evening’s, “Queens Diamond Jubilee celebration”, taking place in the Argyll gardens, in front of 200 plus spectators.

Kicking off the evening’s  entertainment were some of the Dunoon Community Radio roadshow presenters, Jim Brannigan, Willie Stewart and Victor Thomas, who throughout the evening played Number One Hit Records from the past 60 years of the Queen’s Reign.

After a short welcoming speech from Dunoon Community Council  Chair Anne Gabriel, the festivities began with a couple of cracking self penned songs – Sik N Tired and Each Passing Day(Song To Love)- from local singer, songwriter and musician..and soon to reach national fame Douglas “dougiefromthecosmos”  Macauley.who got the crowd in the mood for what was to come.

Next up were four little superstars in the making, Megan Glavin, Mariesa Hodgins, Murrin Emmerson and Jade Tracey, members of St Mun’s Glee club –  who soon had everyone singing and dancing along to their take on “One Directions” hit song “What makes you Beautiful”.

They were followed by Dunoon’s own Scottish Scouser..Keith McCumskey, who provided the humour and comedy, with participation from the audience.

Next we had Dunoon’s National Treasures..

Highland dancers from The Katriona Martin School.

Taking part were Claire Black, Allana Miller, Holly Macdonald,Charlie Leigh Macdonald, Catherine Macdonald, Gemma Hughes, Carly Mitchell, Laura-Jane McColl and Hannah Hughes. They performed an incredible set of The Highland Fling, Swords, Hornpipe, Flora, Sean Trubhis and ended with a crowd pleasing “Cotton eyed Joe”  performed by Laura-Jane and Hannah and choreographed   by Laura-Jane using Highland dance steps

Then it was the turn of the 2 young local bands and first up was BLACK LIGHT SYNDROME with band members Ewan MacDonald (Vocals/Guitar), Jason Mc Vicar (Guitar) and Ben Docherty (Vocals/Cajon). They performed a rocking set of Blue Jeans, The Captain and ended with the classic Beatles song Yellow submarine which got the 200 plus crowd to their feet to dance and sing.

Finally, last but not least and rounding off the evenings entertainment came a blistering set from DEADWAIT’s Ben Docherty (Vocals/Guitar), Kyran Strachan (Bass), Alex Philips (Lead Guitar) and Martin Hodgins (Cajon).

They ended  the night of amazing local Talent with Lego house, Face Down and the Nirvana classic – Smells Like Teen Spirit which as with the final song of the previous band again brought the audience to their feet with .

A great night was had by all and the nights proceedings ended with a trip to the Castle gardens…for the lighting of the beacon at 10.01 pm.

Thanks to everyone who attended, The Community Council, The Dunoon Community radio Volunteers, The performers and the audience..well done for managing to out-stay the unwelcome visitors who tried to sabotage the proceedings..Those flying pirahna’s…The Scottish Midge.

Also thanks to the 3 in1 for providing the Presenters with some much needed sustenance in the form of delicious fish suppers FINTASTIC.
