THE RUNDOWN TO THE COWAL HIGHLAND GATHERING STARTS NOW with FRLLY                                                                                                                    NEW EVENT FOR COWAL HIGHLAND GATHERING/SATURDAY 25th AUGUST
Ian Cairns  who along with Janet Fletcher is organising the new COWAL HILL RACE came into the DCR97.4fm Argyll street Studio to inform listeners about this new event   Ian a very experienced athlete himself who unfortunately through a foot injury will not be able to compete this year gave the listeners a very detailed run down of this new  Cowal Gathering event.

The Cowal Hill Race, sponsored by Argyll Financial Services, will take place on Saturday 31st August and will see the runners set off from the town centre before scaling ’The Camels Hump’ (Tom Odhar) where on arrival at the top of the first runner a yellow flare will be ignited and then racing to the finish line in the stadium itself.

As Ian mentioned Scottish Athletics guidelines mean only runners over 16 are able to compete in the hill race.

It is a 5km race with a climb of 616ft so will present a real challenge to the runners and the finish will be a spectacle for those in the stadium.

On the day registration for runners will be in Argyll Gardens from 12.30pm and the race will start at 1.30pm.

However the fun will start earlier than that as local ceilidh band, Canned Haggis, will be entertaining runners and competitors alike from 11.30am in the Argyll Gardens. There will also be Scottish Country Dancing demonstrations at the same time.

At approximately 1pm there will be a performance from a pipe band (more details soon) in the Argyll Gardens. At 1.30pm the pipe band will then play the runners along Argyll Street to the official starting point by the Burgh Hall.

After the runners are on their way the pipe band will play their way to the stadium.

Every runner that takes part will receive a medal with trophies for the 1st male, 1st female and 1st local runner’s home. The presentations will be at 2.30pm on the west platform in the stadium.
