Man of the Minch   – Pedro Cameron

Formerly the fiddle player in the Glasgow Americana act The Dirty Beggars, “Man of the Minch” is  the alias of Pedro Cameron – marking a massive change of tack. Mixing elements of folk, pop, country and electropop – the music is undefinable. Drawing on lyrical themes of loss, friendship and life as a member of the LGBT community, first EP “Helping Hands” is an eclectic mix, bolstered by no-holds barred production, and virtuoso fiddle playing from toast of the folk world Laura Wilkie (Shooglenifty,  Kinnaris Quintet, Ross Ainslie) as well as appearances from Conor Markey (Paul McKenna Band, The Wakes), additional vocals by Emilie Boyd (Old World News, Little Acres) and spoken word interludes by reknowned Glasgow poet Sam Small – this is as much a reflection of the disparate talents of its contributors as the songwriting and performance of its spearhead

Emma Martin
Emma Martin  a singer songwriter, living in Glasgow, studying Commercial Music ,have been writing for over 20 years. She mostly plays solo or with a fiddle accompaniment  At the start of last yearshe  began writing a collection of songs about the Jute Mills in Dundee, writing for the first time in old Scots. The first track ‘Kettle Bilers’ won last years Hands up for Trad Scots song writing competition. Her love of Scots and of Scottish traditional music have spurred her on to writing and recording more in this vain!
Nicolette MacLeod
Nicolette Macleod is a singer songwriter from Glasgow. Her music is a blend of folk and jazz which reveals hints of her classical training, time at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and her grandfather’s roots on the Isle of Lewis. She writes original material and arranges British Isles’ folk songs, which she performs with guitar and by looping vocal harmonies live. Shewas a finalist at the Loop Station Championship in London where she performed an original song that later won her a recording session at The Roundhouse EMI studio.  Nicolette has supported and sung alongside some well known names including The Leisure Society, The Irrepressibles and Karine Polwart. Her vocals have been used on a number of films and in a pop setting for albums receiving prime time radio play on BBC2 and BBC6. She also has a passion for writing music for theatre and dance. Most recently she wrote and performed the music for ‘Curious Shoes’ a dementia friendly theatre show.

Blair Conron

Blair Coron/ Lesley Barr / Roo Geddes/ Rhona MacFarlane / Callum Elks/ Sarah McWhinney / Nicole Stapinski
Blair is a musician and composer residing in Glasgow blending the borders between contemporary classical music, ambience, electronics, folk and poetry. With the aid of a 9 piece string ensemble his primary intention is to create enchanting atmospheres that sets course for introspection and meditation.

When not performing with the band, Blair regularly collaborates and composes with those in the other arts with a keen interest in how these can be translated between one another. Recently, he scored a new play by Andrew Edwards (winner of the Roxy Theatre award), performed throughout the whole of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2017 and has a new show lined up in March 2018, which aims to tackle the accessibility of music for deaf people.

The Canny Band

The Canny Band Sam Mabbett & Michael Biggins
After year of playing together in various different bands, Sam Mabbett (Melodeon) and Michael Biggins (piano) come together as a duo to form ‘The Canny Band’.
Michael and Sam first met at Folkworks traditional music summer school in 2013 and quickly decided that they should be making music together. However, as they lived at opposite ends of the country, this proved difficult! Now, 5 years on, they live around the corner from each other in Glasgow and have no excuse not to play together!
The pair are currently students at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and play music from Ireland, Scotland and everywhere else.

ROSS MACFADYEN AT DOUGIE MACLEAN CONCERT

There’s only a very few performers that can hold an audience in the palm of their hands. There are even fewer who can do so in a venue with a 2,000+ audience such as the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, all by themselves, with a handful of guitars, harmonica and a didgeridoo.

One such artist is Scotland’s much loved troubadour, Dougie MacLean OBE.

Dougie’s set list is garnered from a career spanning over 40 years, mostly based in the tranquil setting of Highland Perthshire. This gives his songwriting a unique perspective on history, politics and storytelling often through the experiences of his own family.

Indeed the MacLean Machine (if you will) is all family (past and present), with Mrs MacLean managing and son and daughter heavily involved in all things creative and ancestors and grandchildren equally providing inspiration. The family ethos extends to the myriad of people who work and volunteer during the Perthshire Amber festival and translates to the concert setting.

Dougie doesn’t just perform his songs, he shares them with the audience. This may be through wee gems of anecdotes about the songs and life in general or though involving the audience in singing along.

In the setting of the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, the impact is particularly powerful, with the balcony singing solo to This Love Will Carry. Dougie accused the balcony of non-participation, providing the rest of the audience with acoustic goosebumps. Dougie is keen for the audience to keep to the beat and melody, with a fond protection of the songs.

Stories are an essential part of the evening. I will now have the image of a caravan blowing past the window as it is tossed in a virulent Atlantic Lewis storm while I listen to Feel So Near.

No Dougie MacLean concert is complete without a rendition his “wee homesick song”, Caledoniahas become part of our common culture, and rightly so. I don’t know about the rest of the audience, but a wee tear always comes to my eye during Caledonia. It was just one highlight of a concert filled with highlights.

After the concert, Dougie shines as well. It’s a pleasure watching him interact with festival goers, chatting, signing CDs and having a ball.

Five stars without a doubt for this concert and if Mr MacLean is playing near you, I thoroughly recommend to you a great night out.

As such they are inspired by many cultures; Scottish, Irish, Scandinavian and Canadian being some of the influences on their repertoire.
Over the last few years, both musicians have had the pleasure of being involved in the Cèilidh Trail movement, run by Fèisean nan Gaidheal, which gave them the opportunity to tour in bands and perform in various venues in their local areas and beyond. Some highlights of those tours include concerts at Celtic Connections and the Blàs Festival. Anna is a fluent Gaelic speaker and Calum has a great knowledge of the Scots language. They are also both very interested in learning more about the traditional music and heritage from other parts of Scotland as well as around the world. Living and studying in Glasgow, they wish to develop and enhance their musical identities, both as individuals and as a duo; taking full advantage of the fantastic opportunities that this vibrant city holds.

TRIPPLE

triple

Tripple are Cait, Annie and Jill; sisters and mum. Tripple have a big love of the traditional music and songs of Scotland and especially enjoy arranging them in a contemporary way. By using interesting harmonies, finely tuned dynamics, with a wee spattering of unusual sounds for good measure we love bringing the old songs to life and help tell the stories within. Tripple are 2/3 based in Glasgow, 1/3 in Banffshire. Although the sisters are still in their very early twenties they have been enjoying singing, fiddling and harping they were wee and started performing at the world Burns federation competitions when they were just eight years old. Tripple are regular performers and between us we appear, and have appeared, in NYCoS, the North East Folk Collective, the Strathspey Fiddlers, Feis Rois Ceilidh Trail, Peplo, Local Vocals and Aurora Choir. We have performed in Ireland, Canada, USA, France, Germany, Finland, Norway and all over Scotland including the Usher Hall, Edinburgh, Balmoral and Fyvie Castles, the Scottish Parliament, Dunfermline Pavilion and Aberdeen’s Music Hall. Tripple is an old Scots word describing both a dance step and the swell of the tide which neatly sums up our approach to song. – https://www.facebook.com/theLennoxFamily/

Gordon Kennedy
Gordon Kennedy is a poet, composer & singer from Glasgow, Scotland. He comes from a background of electronic music, being one half of electronic / experimental duo The Cray Twins. His recent work has involved environmental recordings, which he uses to make instruments from the sounds of the landscape: from the wind and the waves, from traffic and machinery, from birds’ wings and human voices. This is now merging increasingly with his engagement in the British folk tradition: the music of the land, using instruments made of the landscape. Old and new music using old, new instruments. Breath, voice and then everything.

ANOTHER BLUESMAN AT CMR95FM CELTIC CONNECTIONS BROADCAST WITH GAVIN PATERSON

DSCN7655

Great Set this morning from the CMR 95FM Buchanan Suite Studio when Gavin Paterson chatted to  Bluesman Andrew Robert Eustace

DSCN7633

. Andrew has been listening to the blues all his 30 years and playing the blues from the age of 10, his first concert was at the age of Four at the Royal Concert Hall to see Chuck Berry and one must obviously assume that he was born into a family that loved the blues and when he says his main influence is BB King do not jump to the conclusion that Andrew is a bluesman tribute artist.  What you get is Andrew Robert Eustace screaming out through a thousand reverent influences of the blues with original lyrics, music and soul.

Andrew Robert Eustace

Andrew has just released his debut Album titled Stories writing all the songs himself  which he is taking on the road with a band of musicians who all unlike Andrew are not professional musicians but love the blues.  Andrew and the band will be performing at Glasgow’s Oran Mor on the 17th of February!
