DGS PUPILS LEARN FIRST HAND WORKINGS OF UK GOVERNMENT FOR SCOTLAND

A class of 29 Dunoon Grammar School pupils were hosted by David Mundell, the Secretary of State for Scotland, in London on Thursday to learn first-hand about the workings of the UK Government for Scotland.
The students came to Westminster as part of their modern studies course and were given an insight into the workings of a government department and the roles of MPs and Ministers during their trip to the Scotland Office in Dover House on Whitehall.
They also took part in a question-and-answer session with the Scottish Secretary which covered a wide range of political, social and international issues including the Syrian refugee crisis, the workings of the UK Government for Scotland and the continuing importance of a democratic voting system.
David Mundell said: “It was a pleasure to welcome the pupils of Dunoon Grammar School to the Scotland Office. They were bright and engaging and came armed with thoughtful and wide-ranging questions. It’s so important that young people get involved in politics and meeting students like this always makes me optimistic about the future.
“London is a great place to come and see the political system in action. I’m glad the pupils had the opportunity to see Whitehall and the Houses of Parliament first hand and I hope they feel inspired when they get back to their modern studies class.”
Afterwards, Dunoon Grammar School pupil Scott McKinnon said:
“It was interesting to hear about the way the Scottish Parliament and the Scotland Office work together and in fact it’s mainly good despite the politics”.
