COWAL FEST GETTING READY FOR THE FINAL WEEK END WITH WALKING THE COWAL WAY –ANCIENT SETTLEMENTS-WORLD WAR ONE & “HALF HUNG MCPHUN”

With just three days left there is still time to take part in one of the unique events that form part of this annual Walking and Outdoors Festival one of the largest and most varied walking festivals in Scotland, with more than 80 walks led by expert and knowledgeable walk leaders.

 Cowal Way 6 – Ardgarten to Inveruglas A walk amongst the highest and most rugged hills of the Arrochar mountains, surrounded by four ‘munros’. Easy paths with gradual climb. Finish at Inveruglas.

Glendaruel Mast An easy forestry road. Steady walk up service road to Glendaruel Mast (GR 994888 ). Spectacular 360 degree views North to Ben Cruachan and South down Loch Fyne………….

.Strachur Historical Walk Learn about ‘Half Hung McPhun’ on this walk around Strachur and in the grounds of Sir Fitzroy MacLean’s estate. En route visit an iron age dun and ruins of a watermill……………

STRAC HIST WALK.

Inverchapel to Whistlefield and return The walk is on a good track with just one small steep section . Great views of Loch Eck. Stop at hotel for a coffee or pint before returning to Inverchapel. A little surprise at the end of the walk !……………….

The Abandoned Settlements between Dunoon and Innellan Visit all the ancient settlements between Dunoon and Innellan (Cnochan, North Gerhallow, South Gerhallow, Gairhill, Croitcorrach )
and to two archaeologicalsites ( Recessed hut platform, Creag nan Cat, and cresentic burial cairn(2000 BC) above Innellan Golf course and spectacular (surprise) Victorian Folly. Until the 18th century this was the only route on foot to Innellan. Mary Queen of Scots rode it on horse back.
