The organisation of the Royal National Mod is the responsibility of An Comunn Gàidhealach. Founded in Oban in 1891, An Comunn Gàidhealach has supported the teaching, learning and use of the Gaelic language and the study and cultivation of Gaelic literature, history, music and art for over 100 years.

In 1992, the Mod was granted a royal charter and since then it has been known as The Royal National Mod. HM The Queen is patron of the Mod’s parent body An Comunn Gàidhealach and members of the Royal Family often attend the event.

The focus of the Mod is mainly on competition and it attracts competitors from the Gaelic communities throughout the UK, Ireland, Australia, Canada and the US. The event also offers an extensive programme of Fringe events which regularly include performances from some of Scotland’s top traditional musicians.

In addition to providing a national and international platform for promotion of the Gaelic language and culture, the Mod provides a major economic and cultural boost to the host area and also attracts considerable national and international publicity, raising the profile of the host location. The Mod also represents an annual opportunity for Gaels and non-Gaels to gather and renew old friendships as well as forging new ones.
