COWAL COMMUNITY HOSPITAL ANSWERS BACK

******OUTPATIENTS CLINICS********

Common questions we hear are ‘Why have I been referred across the water?’ or ‘Why do we not have outpatient clinics at the hospital?’ – so we want to try and answers these.

We run several outpatient clinics throughout the month here in Cowal and we have listed them below. The clinics below are those overseen by our Medical Records department. As we discuss other departments over the coming weeks we will touch on clinics specific to those areas.

In the month of September 282 people were booked onto the below clinics – 13% (38) did not attend their appointment.

Referrals are made by GP’s and then vetted by the Consultant who will be leading the clinic. The decision as to whether you will be seen in Dunoon or will have to attend another hospital, normally for a more specialist appointment, is made by the medical professional based on each individual case. This may be due to the requirement for investigations or procedures that require facilities often found only in larger acute hospitals.

Waiting lists can also be a factor in where you will be seen. You will sometimes be offered an appointment at another hospital if the wait would be too long for you to be seen in Cowal, this is common practice across NHS Scotland.

Our Consultant led clinics are supported by visiting consultants from NHS Greater, Glasgow & Clyde.

We are also starting Near Me clinics for certainly specialities and this is already being used in some of our departments. Near Me is virtual clinics using secure video technology. This is an important development and could change the way people in more remote areas access some of their healthcare. We will expand on this in a later post.
