GLASGOW IS WELCOMING THE ROYAL NATIONAL MOD

Glasgow’s Leading Attractions are delighted to welcome The Royal National Mod – Scotland’s premier Gaelic Festival – back to Glasgow for the first time in 29 years.
Taking place from 11th – 19th October 2019, the festival provides opportunities for people of all ages to perform across a range of competitive disciplines. Events will be running across the city and some of Glasgow’s Leading Attractions members have programmed special events to take place during the eight-day festival. Here’s what’s in store:
Opening tomorrow at The Hunterian is GUGA: Exploring Gaelic Identities – an exhibition which considers how historic perceptions of Gaelic culture have been formed and sustained and asks what this culture, and its language, means in contemporary Scotland.
GUGA features both Gaelic and English texts plus must-see items from the collections of The Hunterian and University of Glasgow Archives and Special Collections. These include one of the oldest known Highland ‘Targes’ – a Neolithic skeleton from Tiree; some of the earliest Gaelic printed books and a slideshow of images by award winning photographer, Laetitia Vancon, offering a photo documentary of young people living in the Outer Hebrides. From tomorrow until 19th October, The Willow Tea Rooms in Buchanan Street and Watt Brothers Department Store will be running a special Royal National Mod menu to celebrate the event. The three-course menu includes Willow favourites: homemade soup of the day; prawn cocktail or fresh juice. Mains include: Haggis, neeps and tatties; avocado toast with Lapsang Souchong smoked salmon or cherry tomatoes and Scottish beef or vegetable chilli; followed by tea, coffee and shortbread for £11.95 (last food order in Buchanan Street is 5.30pm and Watt Brothers at 3.30pm. On Sunday 13th October, Princes Square present an evening with a Gaelic gospel choir. The Soisgeul Choir is made up of singers from around Scotland. They will be bringing an evening of Celtic Praise to the stunning surroundings of Princes Square. This FREE event takes place at 7.30pm. You can also pre-book one of Princes Square’s many fine restaurants to enjoy the music while you dine.
